A 21-year-old, Dalit man was brutally murdered, with his hands tied, in Tamil Nadu allegedly by three caste Hindu men on a nugatory basis for breaking a plastic tap in their field on Saturday. The three men have been arrested by the Trichy police.
The Dalit man was identified as Kathiresan, he was an auto driver and also a Dalit right’s activist, coming from Manachanallur town of Trichy district in Tamil Nadu. In caste hierarchy, caste Hindus are placed higher than Dalits but below upper-caste Hindus.
A few days before the murder on July 7, Kathiresan had a tussle with Thangarasu regarding the broken tap in Thangarasu’s farm. Later he, along with his two sons, headed to Kathiresan’s house and allegedly threatened his family. After Thangarasu and his two sons accompanied by another dozen men and together had tracked down Kathiresan and the group allegedly started attacking him. Kathiresan’s wide was also beaten up when she tried to intervene.
Thangarasu and his men left him unconscious and tied his hands. Before leaving the spot, they told Kathiresan’s wife that they would take him to the Mannachanallur police station. Later Kathiresan’s wife and other family members waited at the police station but no one turned up from other side. Kathiresan’s wife Nandini filed a complaint with the police. According to police investigation, Thangarusu allegedly took Kathiresan to his farm and along with some others assaulted him and killed him by hitting his head with a boulder.

When police was about the conclude the probe as personal enmity, some people approached police and claimed to have evidence that shows that he was murdered for marrying a caste Hindu woman. They alleged that Thangarasu repeatedly hurled caste slurs at Kathiresan for marrying Nandini, a caste Hindu. They claimed that even while beating him up near the local shop, Thangarasu allegedly told Kathiresan that he cannot become his equal by marrying a caste Hindu girl.
Based on the new evidence, Thanagarasu and his sons Bhaskar and Suresh were been booked under IPC Section 294 (b), 342, 506 (iii) and 302 and multiple sections of the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Amendment Act. In their statement to the police, Thanagarasu and his sons have confessed to their crime.
